Truman and Joan Moore’s Charitable Gift Annuity to Help Support Mercer’s Future

Truman A. Moore, CLAS ’59, and Joan Jameson Moore, CLAS ’59, met as transfer students at Mercer. They both sang in the choir and were involved in the Baptist Student Union. They were deeply impacted by their Mercer experiences, classmates, and professors.

After graduating from Mercer, Truman attended seminary and became a pastor while Joan worked in data management. Feeling called to the profession of social work, Truman earned a master’s degree and began a 31-year career with the Department of Human Resources. Joan was later hired by the state as a research specialist for the Department of Education, a position she held for 18 years.

Philanthropy has always been important to Truman and Joan, and they have consistently made small annual gifts to Mercer and a variety of other charitable organizations. After learning about philanthropic sustainers, the couple decided they wanted to become sustaining supporters of Mercer and set up monthly, recurring gifts.

Truman was involved in planned giving at his church and decided it was time to plan for the years ahead. He wanted to ensure that Joan’s needs would be met in the event that she outlives him.

“Because I was with the state longer than Joan, there is a difference in our pensions,” said Truman. “I liked the idea that if I should die before her, there is a way to continue providing additional income for her.”

By setting up a charitable gift annuity, Truman and Joan will have income now that will leave a lasting legacy at Mercer in the future.
