The son of Claude Smith, Sr., Mercer baseball coach from 1943 to 1977, Claude grew up on the Mercer campus. He graduated from Lanier High School in Macon in 1970 and earned a bachelor of arts degree from Mercer’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in 1974. After a year playing professional baseball with the Pittsburgh Pirates, he returned to Mercer to serve as assistant vice president of admissions from 1975 to 1979. Claude graduated from Mercer Law School in 1982 and began his legal career with Deal and Smith in Boone, North Carolina. In 1996 Claude began serving as director of planned giving at Mercer University. With almost 30 years of legal experience and a lifetime of knowledge about Mercer, Claude is uniquely equipped to help with all of your planned giving questions and needs.
