Tindol Uses Inherited Funds to Establish a Scholarship for Medical Students
A native of Dublin, Georgia, Dr. G. Allen Tindol, Jr. graduated from the University of Georgia before attending graduate school at Georgia Tech, where he studied computer science. Following a brief career as a computer programmer, he entered medical school at the age of 34 and became a 38-year-old intern in internal medicine at Memorial Health University Medical Center (MHUMC) in Savannah, where he completed his residency and remained on the residency teaching faculty throughout most of the 1990s.
In 1999 Dr. Tindol enrolled in a fellowship program with the CDC, completing the program in 2001. After working in various areas of health care, he moved to Macon in 2016 to join the faculty of Mercer University School of Medicine (MUSM) and work with medical students and internal medicine residents.
Having grown up in a rural area in Georgia, Dr. Tindol is very supportive of MUSM’s mission to train primary care physicians for underserved rural areas of the state. Dr. Tindol stated, “In some small way, whether through training future physicians or through my financial contributions, I hope to support MUSM in achieving its goal of improving the health of rural Georgians.”
Recently, Dr. Tindol was the recipient of an inheritance from a late aunt and uncle who spent their lives in a very rural, medically underserved part of Georgia. He used the inherited funds to establish a scholarship for MUSM students. “Sponsoring a scholarship in the name of my aunt and uncle seemed like a good way to attach their name to something for which, were they living, they would feel great satisfaction and pride,” said Dr. Tindol.
Encouraging others to support Mercer, Dr. Tindol said, “Though there are several ‘good causes’ to which alumni and friends can contribute, I believe that making a gift to Mercer—especially one that will improve the health of the medically underserved in our state—is as worthy a cause as one might imagine. If you can, I encourage you to do it!”
